Ready Mix Concrete (RMC): The Complete Guide for Infrastructure Projects

Ready mix concrete transit mixer at an infrastructure construction site

Walk past any major highway, bridge or metro site in India and you will see them: white transit mixers queuing at a batching plant. Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) has transformed how India builds — delivering consistent, plant-batched concrete directly to construction sites. Here is the complete guide.

What Is Ready Mix Concrete?

RMC is concrete batched at a central plant according to computer-controlled mix designs, then transported in rotating transit mixers to the site. Unlike site-mixed concrete, RMC guarantees uniform quality, precise water-cement ratios and documented test results — critical for infrastructure designed to last 50–100 years.

How RMC Is Produced

The process starts with mix design: selecting cement grade, aggregates (graded 10mm/20mm), sand, water and admixtures to achieve target strength (M15 to M60 commonly). At the plant, aggregates are weighed by load cells, cement from silos, and water metered precisely. Batching computers record every load. Admixtures — plasticisers, retarders, superplasticisers — fine-tune workability for Indian climate conditions.

Transit and Placement

Once batched, concrete loads into transit mixers (8–12 cu.m capacity) that keep the mix agitated during transport. IS 4925 specifies maximum transit times — typically 30 minutes for normal mixes. On-site, RMC can be poured directly, lifted with cranes, or placed with boom pumps and line pumps for high-rises and mass foundations.

Quality Testing of RMC

Quality assurance happens at three points: at the plant (slump, temperature, cube casting), in transit (rotation checks, time logs), and at the site (slump retension, cube sampling as per IS 1199). Cubes are cured and tested at 7 and 28 days for compressive strength. Full documentation — mix design, delivery challans, test reports — creates an audit trail for infrastructure asset owners.

Advantages for Infrastructure Projects

  • Consistency — plant batching eliminates human error from site mixing
  • Speed — continuous supply supports large pours like bridge piers and metro piers
  • Quality records — cube results and batch data for every cubic metre
  • Cost control — optimised mix designs reduce cement consumption without losing strength
  • Less waste — no leftover site-mixed concrete, no material stockpiling on site

Kuberagroup RMC Capability

Kuberagroup operates RMC plants supporting our own highway, bridge and metro projects — and external clients. We supply M15–M60 mixes with transit mixer fleets and pumping support. Visit our RMC plants service page or request concrete supply for your project.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grades of RMC are available in India?

Ready mix concrete is commonly supplied from M15 to M60 grades as per IS 456, with custom high-performance and self-compacting mixes available for specialised infrastructure needs.

What is the maximum transit time for RMC?

IS guidelines typically limit RMC transit to about 30 minutes for normal mixes; retarder admixtures can extend placement windows for hot-weather or long-distance delivery.

Is RMC better than site-mixed concrete?

RMC offers consistent plant-controlled quality, documented test results and faster placement — making it the preferred choice for highways, bridges, metro and high-rise projects.
